Soy is the most overrated food of my lifetime.
For a while it was linked to a long list of
health benefits, including cholesterol reduc-
tion. Most of these claims were unfounded.
Although soybeans themselves include
327 complete proteins-one of the few non-
animal foods that do-most soy products,
such as tofu, are low in nutrients and offer
poorly utilized, incomplete proteins. But
people today still consider it a health-promot-
ing food, which is odd since it offers no
proven benefits to the entire male gender. It
may actually lead to estrogen production-the
opposite of what a musclehead needs or wants.
I recommend avoiding anything with soy
on the label. But even if you manage that, you
can't avoid soy altogether. Soy products are
hidden in so many foods today that we all get
more of them than we could ever keep track of
Not only is fast food often laced with concen-
trated vegetable proteins made from soy, but
seemingly soyless foods like milk, flour, and
various vegetable oils might also include soy. So
even though a nutrition label might not indicate
any soy at all, there's always a chance that soy
has been snuck in as part of another ingredient.
